Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Clemente, California, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Originally built in 1927 as the private residence of Ole Hanson, the founder of San Clemente, this Spanish Colonial Revival mansion has evolved into a vibrant cultural center that attracts visitors from near and far.
Historical Significance and Architecture
Ole Hanson, a visionary real estate developer, chose San Clemente as his ideal community—a “Spanish Village by the Sea.” Designed by architect Carl Lindbom, known for his work on the former Western White House, La Casa Pacifica, Casa Romantica reflects an eclectic Spanish Revival style. The mansion features a unique moon gate entrance, an octagonal tower that served as Hanson’s study, and hand-made Mexican “thigh tiles” adorning the roof.
Transition to Cultural Center
Throughout its history, Casa Romantica changed ownership several times until the San Clemente Redevelopment Agency purchased it in 1989. Recognizing its historical and architectural significance, the estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. After years of debate and fundraising efforts, the city council designated Casa Romantica as a cultural center in 2001, supported by a substantial anonymous donation.
Cultural Programs and Events
Since opening its doors to the public in 2003, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens has become a hub of cultural and educational activities. As a non-profit organization, Casa Romantica offers a diverse array of programs including concerts, art exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and educational events. The center hosts over 60 events annually, catering to all ages and interests—from classical music festivals to horticulture workshops and literary readings.
Gardens and Landscape
The 2.5-acre gardens surrounding Casa Romantica are a botanical marvel, featuring coastal flora and plantings dating back to Ole Hanson’s original design in 1927. Visitors can explore the meticulously curated gardens, which also include displays of Native American plants used by the Acjachemen Indians, the area’s original inhabitants.
