What Alcohol Detox at Oceans Looks Like

Stopping alcohol after heavy, daily drinking is one of the few withdrawals that can be life-threatening. Medical alcohol detox lets the team ease symptoms, watch for seizures and delirium tremens, and step in early. At Oceans, detox happens in the same private San Clemente home where you continue treatment.

What the medical team monitors and treats

  • Tremor, sweating and a racing heart
  • Anxiety, agitation and insomnia
  • Nausea, vomiting and dehydration
  • Seizure and delirium tremens risk

When clinically appropriate, Ativan may be used to manage alcohol withdrawal safely, with clonidine, methocarbamol or trazodone to ease anxiety, muscle aches and sleeplessness. Medications are chosen by our medical team for each person. After detox, you move straight into residential care.

Withdrawal Timeline

What Alcohol Withdrawal Looks Like

Every withdrawal is different, and heavy drinkers can move through these stages faster or more severely. This is why alcohol detox should be supervised from the first day.

6–24 hours

Early Withdrawal

Shakiness, sweating, anxiety, nausea, headache and poor sleep usually begin within hours of the last drink.

12–48 hours

Highest Seizure Risk

Withdrawal seizures are most likely in this window, often around 24 hours, and can happen without warning, even with no prior history.

Days 2–8

Delirium Tremens Risk

In a small share of people, delirium tremens begins around 48–72 hours, peaks around day 5 and can last to about day 8. It is a medical emergency.

Day 5 onward

Stabilizing

For most people, physical symptoms ease within about a week. Sleep, mood and cravings take longer, which is why residential care follows detox.

I had a great experience at this treatment center! Completely changed my life and path that I was on, Jeremiah is an excellent therapist and a solid man in recovery, Jason is a 10/10 case manager, both helped me formulate my plan and aided me on my path of success. Oceans was the perfect place to go while detoxing from my pain meds after years of being on them. The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous (one of the best sunsets ever!)! The staff really cares and leads by example by working their own programs. Nobody likes to feel like they can’t handle things at home and on their own, but sometimes we just can’t. If you’re struggling to take control of your life back, you should absolutely call Oceans recovery. The team is filled with a knowledgeable, yet very sweet staff, and has a therapist & case manager on site to help navigate your stay & also what happens when you go back home. I was happy to find a place that will treat you with respect, like a person, not an addict. I would recommend this place to anybody who is searching for something, and don’t think they can do it on their own. It starts with a single call… to get the rest of your life back!

Oceans Recovery in San Clemente is truly outstanding! I couldn't be more pleased with my experience. Tiffany and Valerie are exceptional technicians who provide incredible support throughout the process. Selena made the intake process seamless and efficient, and I was pleasantly surprised when they flew me in from Sacramento. The staff, including Jon and Nick, goes above and beyond to ensure your recovery journey is both comfortable and enjoyable. And the therapists? They are absolutely top-notch! I can't recommend Oceans Recovery highly enough. You won’t be disappointed!

First time in my life I really improved my life by coming to oceans. I came a slave to subsistences and excited to leave a free man. The chief the entire staff was amazing hands down. Supportive excited about what they do while they make it a vibe to do the same with other house mates. They show that you can have fun without subsistences. I came coming to a recovery I realized quick there not workers but hero’s. Thank you oceans staff for everything y’all do.

Alcohol Detox FAQs

At Oceans, most alcohol detox stays last about 7 days. Physical symptoms usually peak in the first 2 to 3 days, but seizure and delirium tremens risk can continue for several days after that, so detox is not rushed. Residential treatment typically follows for about 30 days.

It can be. After heavy, daily drinking, withdrawal can cause seizures, usually within 12 to 48 hours of the last drink, and delirium tremens, which typically starts around 48 to 72 hours and can last to about day 8. Both are medical emergencies. Medical detox reduces these risks and allows the team to act quickly.

When clinically appropriate, Ativan (lorazepam) may be used to manage alcohol withdrawal safely, alongside clonidine, methocarbamol or trazodone for anxiety, muscle aches and sleep. Our medical team, under Medical Director Mitchell Naficy, MD, decides on medication for each person.

Medical detox is the safer choice for anyone who drinks heavily every day, has had a seizure or delirium tremens before, also uses other substances such as benzodiazepines or opioids, has heart, liver or other medical conditions, or has no one to stay with them during withdrawal. If you are unsure, call us and we will talk it through.

Many PPO insurance plans cover medically necessary alcohol detox. Our admissions team verifies your benefits immediately and confidentially, so you know where you stand before you arrive. Call (844) 798-0516.

There is no transfer and no second intake. When detox is complete, you move into residential treatment in the same private San Clemente home with the same care team, followed by step-down care such as partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and sober living.
