Sober living, explained

What Is Sober Living?

A sober living home is a substance-free residence for people in early recovery. It sits between treatment and fully independent living: you live with others who are also committed to staying sober, follow house structure, and gradually take back daily responsibilities.

At Oceans, sober living is part of our continuum of care. Many residents move into sober living after residential rehab and continue treatment in our PHP, IOP or outpatient program.

The goal is simple: more independence each week, without losing the support that got you sober.

Is sober living right for you?

When Sober Living Makes Sense

Sober living is often recommended when:

  • You’re finishing residential treatment and aren’t ready to go straight home
  • Home isn’t a stable or substance-free place right now
  • You’re starting PHP, IOP or outpatient care and want structure in the evenings
  • You want accountability while you rebuild routines

Still need treatment first?

Sober living is not a substitute for detox or rehab. If you’re still drinking or using, start with medical detox and residential rehab, then step into sober living.

I had a great experience at this treatment center! Completely changed my life and path that I was on, Jeremiah is an excellent therapist and a solid man in recovery, Jason is a 10/10 case manager, both helped me formulate my plan and aided me on my path of success. Only go here if you want to be healed from your addictions and ego!

Oceans was the perfect place to go while detoxing from my pain meds after years of being on them. The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous (one of the best sunsets ever!)! The staff really cares and leads by example by working their own programs. Nobody likes to feel like they can’t handle things at home and on their own, but sometimes we just can’t. If you’re struggling to take control of your life back, you should absolutely call Oceans recovery. The team is filled with a knowledgeable, yet very sweet staff, and has a therapist & case manager on site to help navigate your stay & also what happens when you go back home. I was happy to find a place that will treat you with respect, like a person, not an addict. I would recommend this place to anybody who is searching for something, and don’t think they can do it on their own. It starts with a single call… to get the rest of your life back!

Oceans Recovery in San Clemente is truly outstanding! I couldn't be more pleased with my experience. Tiffany and Valerie are exceptional technicians who provide incredible support throughout the process. Selena made the intake process seamless and efficient, and I was pleasantly surprised when they flew me in from Sacramento. The staff, including Jon and Nick, goes above and beyond to ensure your recovery journey is both comfortable and enjoyable. And the therapists? They are absolutely top-notch! I can't recommend Oceans Recovery highly enough. You won’t be disappointed!

First time in my life I really improved my life by coming to oceans. I came a slave to subsistences and excited to leave a free man. The chief the entire staff was amazing hands down. Supportive excited about what they do while they make it a vibe to do the same with other house mates. They show that you can have fun without subsistences. I came coming to a recovery I realized quick there not workers but hero’s. Thank you oceans staff for everything y’all do.

Cost & insurance

Paying for Treatment and Sober Living

Many insurance plans cover medically necessary treatment, such as detox, residential rehab, PHP, IOP and outpatient care. Sober living is housing rather than clinical treatment, so it’s usually paid for separately from insurance-covered care.

Oceans accepts most PPO plans, including Cigna, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and GEHA, for treatment. Our admissions team can explain your options.

Sober Living FAQs

A sober living home is a structured, substance-free residence for people in early recovery. Residents follow house structure, support each other and gradually return to independent living.

No. Rehab is clinical treatment. Sober living is a supportive place to live, usually combined with outpatient treatment such as PHP, IOP or outpatient therapy.

Sober living is often a good fit after residential treatment, especially if home isn’t stable or substance-free, or if you want structure while attending outpatient care.

Insurance generally covers medically necessary treatment rather than housing, so sober living is usually paid separately. Oceans accepts most PPO plans for treatment. Call (844) 798-0516 to talk through your options.
