About This Alcohol Use Quiz

Medically reviewed by Mitchell Naficy, MD, Medical Director · Updated October 2026

This quiz uses the 10 questions of the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), a screening tool developed by the World Health Organization. Doctors and counselors around the world use it to spot risky drinking early. It looks at three things: how much and how often you drink, signs of dependence, and problems alcohol may be causing in your life.

Each answer scores 0 to 4 points, for a total between 0 and 40. If you answer “Never” to the first question, the quiz skips ahead to the last two questions, which ask about past harm and other people’s concern.

What your score means

ScoreRisk levelSuggested next step
0–7Lower-risk drinkingKeep an eye on how much you drink.
8–15Increasing riskCut back, and talk to your doctor about your drinking.
16–19Harmful drinkingGet a professional assessment and ask about treatment options.
20–40Possible alcohol dependenceSee a doctor or addiction specialist for a full assessment. Ask about medical detox before stopping.

This quiz is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Only a doctor or licensed clinician can diagnose an alcohol use disorder. If you’re worried about your drinking, talking to a professional is a good idea whatever your score.

What counts as one drink?

In the US, one standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That’s roughly:

  • 12 oz of regular beer (about 5% alcohol)
  • 5 oz of wine (about 12% alcohol)
  • 1.5 oz of distilled spirits like vodka, whiskey or tequila (about 40% alcohol)

Many drinks poured at home or in restaurants are larger than one standard drink, so it’s easy to undercount.

Is it safe to stop drinking on your own?

For some people, no. If you drink heavily every day or need a drink in the morning, stopping suddenly can cause alcohol withdrawal. Symptoms can start within hours of your last drink and range from shaking, sweating and anxiety to seizures and delirium tremens (DTs), which can be life-threatening. See our day-by-day alcohol withdrawal timeline for what to expect.

That’s why a doctor should be involved before you quit. Medically supervised alcohol detox keeps you safe and as comfortable as possible while your body adjusts.

Alcohol Quiz FAQs

No. The AUDIT is a screening tool that shows whether your drinking may be risky. Only a doctor or licensed clinician can diagnose an alcohol use disorder after a full assessment.

A score of 20 or more suggests possible alcohol dependence and a need for a full assessment. Scores of 8 to 19 suggest increasing-risk or harmful drinking.

The World Health Organization developed the AUDIT as a simple way for health workers to identify risky drinking. It is one of the most widely used alcohol screening tools in the world.

No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser. Your answers are not stored or sent to Oceans or anyone else.

It can be. People who drink heavily or daily can have serious withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, when they stop suddenly. Talk to a doctor before you stop, and consider medically supervised detox.

Many insurance plans cover alcohol detox and rehab, but coverage depends on your plan. Oceans accepts most PPO plans and checks your benefits for free. Call (844) 798-0516 or use our insurance checker.
