Quick answer: Pack for comfort and routine, not for a vacation. Bring photo ID and your insurance card, every medication you take in its original pharmacy bottle, about a week of comfortable clothes, workout and outdoor clothes, alcohol-free toiletries, phone and laptop chargers, and a few personal items like a journal or photos. Leave behind alcohol, drugs, unapproved supplements, anything containing alcohol, weapons and expensive jewelry. Every program has its own rules, so call admissions to confirm the current list before you pack.
Before you pack: three calls to make
- Verify your insurance benefits. At Oceans this can be done right away, often while you are still on the first call, so you know where you stand before you arrive.
- Arrange time away from work. Many people use medical leave. Your HR team can tell you what applies to you, and you do not need to share details beyond what the process requires.
- Sort out home. Pets, bills, mail, kids’ schedules and anyone who should know where you are. Setting up automatic payments before you leave removes one source of worry.
The rehab packing checklist
Documents and essentials
- Driver’s license, passport or other photo ID
- Insurance card (front and back) and any pharmacy benefit card
- A list of your doctors, therapists and pharmacy, with phone numbers
- Emergency contact names and numbers written down, not just saved in your phone
- A debit or credit card for medication co-pays or incidentals
Medications
- Every prescription you currently take, in its original labeled bottle
- A written list of medications, doses and when you take them
- Any over-the-counter medications, vitamins or supplements you use, also in sealed original packaging. The medical team reviews everything and decides what continues.
Be honest with the admissions and medical team about everything you take, including anything not prescribed to you. It is not about judgment. Withdrawal from alcohol and some medications, such as benzodiazepines, needs to be managed carefully, and the team can only plan for what they know about.
Clothing
- About a week of comfortable everyday clothes. Ask admissions about laundry.
- Workout clothes and supportive shoes
- Something for the beach and the outdoors: a light jacket, a hat, sandals, a swimsuit
- Comfortable sleepwear, slippers or house shoes
- A warmer layer. San Clemente evenings on the coast get cool, even in summer.
- One or two smarter outfits if you expect video calls for work or family sessions
Toiletries
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner
- Sunscreen and lip balm
- Choose alcohol-free products. Most programs do not allow mouthwash, hand sanitizer, cologne or hair products that list alcohol as an ingredient.
- New, sealed products are easiest to clear at check-in
Phone, laptop and work
- Phone and laptop with chargers
- Headphones
- Any work materials you have agreed with your clinical team to keep up with
Many people worry that rehab means going completely offline. At Oceans there is a dedicated business area and structured time for phone and laptop use, so you can keep essential work and family contact going without it taking over your treatment.
For your downtime
- A journal and pens. Writing things down helps in therapy.
- Books, an e-reader, or a sketchbook. Art classes are part of the week at Oceans.
- Photos of the people and pets who matter to you
- Gym gear for the gym and Peloton, and anything you need for the beach, golf or kayaking
What not to bring to rehab
- Alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia
- Medications or supplements that are opened, unlabeled or not in their original packaging
- Products that contain alcohol, such as mouthwash, sanitizer, cologne or some hair products
- Aerosol cans
- Weapons of any kind, including pocket knives
- Expensive jewelry, watches or large amounts of cash
- Revealing clothing or clothing with drug or alcohol imagery
- Food and drinks from outside. Meals are prepared by a chef at Oceans.
These are common rules across most residential programs. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask before you arrive rather than having it held at check-in.
What happens when you arrive
Admission is usually simpler than people expect. You will meet the team, go through paperwork and a medical and mental health assessment, and staff will check your belongings and medications. If you need detox, the medical team starts there. Detox at Oceans usually lasts about seven days, with residential care typically running about 30 days after that. Then you settle into your room. Oceans has six beds, with private and shared rooms, and several rooms and both decks look out over the ocean.
If you are traveling, plan to arrive with enough time to get through admission calmly rather than rushing in late at night. Oceans is at 147 El Levante, Suite B, San Clemente, about 10 minutes from Dana Point and 30 to 35 minutes from Irvine and Newport Beach.

Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my phone to rehab?
Policies vary between programs. At Oceans you can bring your phone and laptop, with structured times for using them and a business area for work, so you stay reachable without it getting in the way of treatment.
How many clothes should I bring to rehab?
About a week of comfortable outfits is enough for most people, plus workout clothes, sleepwear and a warm layer. Ask admissions about laundry so you can pack light.
Can I bring my own medications to rehab?
Yes. Bring every medication in its original labeled pharmacy bottle, along with a written list of doses. The medical team reviews everything and decides what continues during your stay.
What should I not bring to rehab?
Alcohol, drugs, unlabeled or opened medications, products containing alcohol such as mouthwash or sanitizer, aerosols, weapons, valuables and outside food. Check the program’s own list before you pack.
Can I bring vitamins or supplements?
Usually only if they are sealed and in original packaging, and the medical team approves them. Some supplements interact with detox medications, so it is worth asking first.
