Inpatient rehab, explained

What Is Residential (Inpatient) Rehab?

Medically reviewed by Mitchell Naficy, MD, Medical Director · Updated October 2026

Residential rehab, often called inpatient rehab, means you live at the treatment center full time while you recover from drug or alcohol addiction. Instead of fitting therapy around daily life, your days are built around treatment, rest, nutrition and movement, away from the people and places tied to using.

It’s the most intensive level of care outside a hospital. For many people it follows medical detox and comes before step-down care such as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP).

At Oceans, residential treatment happens in a private, six-bed home in San Clemente, Orange County, the same home where detox takes place. There’s no transfer and no second intake.

When Inpatient Rehab Makes Sense

Not everyone needs residential care. A clinician will help you decide, but inpatient rehab is often recommended when:

  • You need medical detox, or withdrawal has been hard before
  • You’ve tried outpatient treatment and relapsed
  • Your home environment makes it hard to stay sober
  • You’re also living with anxiety, depression or trauma
  • Daily life keeps getting in the way of recovery

Oceans accepts most PPO plans, including Cigna, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and GEHA, and self-pay options are available.
